• Laser Hair Removal Questions & Answers

Laser hair removal is a medical procedure that uses a concentrated beam of light (laser) to remove unwanted hair. It is one of the most common cosmetic medical procedures in the United States. During laser hair removal, a laser emits a light that is absorbed by the pigment (melanin) in the hair. The light energy is converted to heat, which damages the tube-shaped sacs within the skin (hair follicles) that produce hairs. This damage inhibits or delays future hair growth. We use a diode laser to treat hair in the anagen phase. The key to successful diode laser hair removal is the deliverance of high energy into the skin. The energy is selectively absorbed by the melanin surrounding the hair follicle whilst not impacting the surrounding tissue. Diode lasers use a single wavelength of light that has a high abruption rate in melanin. As the melanin heats up it destroys the root and blood flow to the follicle disabling the hair growth permanently. Diode lasers deliver high frequency, low fluence pulses and can be safely used on all skin types. We discourage darker skin types (Skin Type V and VI) from treatment with this laser as the energy range we can use is limited and it can take much more than the average number of treatments to see expected results.

You will want to shave the treatment area 1-3 days prior to the treatment. At the first treatment, photos will be taken so we can track your progress. You will be asked to either wear solid goggles (facial areas) or blue tinted goggles during your treatment. Cool ultrasound gel will be applied to the treatment area. The pulse of the laser can be compared to a rubber band being flicked on your skin multiple times. If you have especially dense, dark hair or a low pain tolerance you will most likely want to arrive early to apply our topical numbing cream. After the treatment it is common for the area to be red with little red bumps for 1-2 days. After this patients typically report a falling out period, where they experience little to no hair growth to the area.
As your hair grows in different cycles it is common for it to take multiple treatments to see reduction. Most patients report noticing reduction after the first couple of treatments. It may take anywhere from 6-10 treatments to achieve your desired result of hair removal.
Laser hair removal is considered permanent. This means the hair present during the treatments is permanently removed. As we age, our body can and does produce new follicles and new hair growth. You should plan and expect to need maintenance treatments to treatment areas over the years. Areas prone to hormone related hair growth, such as the female upper lip and chin or the male back, may need more maintenance treatments more often than other areas.
